A Time I Pretended Not to Be Afraid of Heights
If you know me, you know heights are not my thing. Sure, I’ve jumped out of an airplane (for fun). And off of a 10m diving board (unwillingly). So it’s not a paralyzing fear. At the same time, I’m way more comfortable close to ground. When adventure calls though, I have to answer. And the Geierlai Suspension Bridge was an adventure calling if there ever was one. At 330 ft off the ground, it was far above my comfort zone.
We went in the evening, to avoid crowds. I’ve heard that the line can get pretty long during the day. Technically, I think we were supposed to hike back down to where we started in Mörsdorf once we crossed the first time, but the bridge was mostly empty, so we just walked back across. The bridge is only accessible by walking on a paved trail. Mörsdorf has parking, signs to the bridge, bathrooms (don’t forget your coins!) and a cute little waffle shop in the visitor’s center.
There were other fur babies making hiking with their humans, but I was glad I left Luna at home. I didn’t want to be wrangling a bouncy pup and my discomfort.
The view was absolutely beautiful and the sunset was stunning. The only parts that made me a little nervous (for my fellow heights-conscious friends) were when there was a breeze and the bridge swayed a little and the slippery parts where there was still snow. Other than that, I kept a “just keep swimming” mindset and made it across and back.
Like I said before, the view was breathtaking. There are benches on both sides of the bridge, so you can watch the sunset or enjoy the scenery.
Will I do it again? Maybe, but only for the waffles ;)
XOXO,
Natasha
